Traumatic and Non-Traumatic Brain Injury

Multiple Causes of Head Injuries

Concussions & Traumatic and Non-Traumatic Brain Injury: Often Overlooked

Many concussions and mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI), along with subconcussive events, go undiagnosed and never receive proper medical evaluation. They are frequently brushed off as simple “whiplash” injuries because CT and MRI scans appear completely normal. However, a normal scan does not mean no injury occurred.

Traumatic brain injuries can result from a wide range of causes, including:

  • Sports (both youth and adult)
  • Motor vehicle accidents
  • Falls
  • Prolonged surgeries
  • Medications
  • Infections
  • Autoimmune conditions
  • Chronic stress
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Repetitive firearm use
  • Blast injuries
  • Emotional or psychological trauma …and many others.

Inflammation: The Secondary Injury

Scientific research shows that much of the ongoing decline in well-being after a traumatic brain injury (TBI) stems from the brain’s neuroinflammatory response — commonly known as the secondary injury.

While TBI is often linked to physical trauma, it can also be triggered by chemical or metabolic trauma, including medications, surgery, autoimmune conditions, digestive imbalances, and chronic stress. These non-physical insults can disrupt brain function just as profoundly as a direct impact, often leading to depression, anxiety, sleep disturbances, memory impairment, learning difficulties, and other mental health challenges.

We recognize how critical it is to address this secondary injury when treating TBI. That’s why we provide science-backed solutions specifically designed to reduce neuroinflammation and restore healthy brain function. By targeting the root causes of inflammation and supporting optimal brain health, we help improve long-term outcomes for people living with TBI and related conditions.

Chronic Inflammatory Changes After Head Injuries

Once the inflammation associated with TBI begins, it can continue for weeks to years. It can also significantly impact hypothalamic and pituitary function in the brain which can lead to many hormone imbalances. The inflammation and hormonal imbalances can begin to impact emotional, psychological, and physical health as well. Many affected will begin to have complaints of fatigue, anxiety, insomnia, irritability, low libido, and much more.

How We Can Help

We are committed to using the latest, most up to date information to provide our patients with the best possible care. Our provider has completed training under Dr. Mark Gordon through Millenium Health and certified in TBI. We evaluate all recommended hormones and markers associated with brain injury. We use nutraceuticals and hormones as needed to restore levels back to optimal ranges.
