Mental Health

Neurotransmitters, GI Health, Micronutrient Status, Hormones, & Thyroid

Mental health issues can stem from various causes. It is important to evaluate them all. No treatment should be one size fits all, and that also includes mental health.

It has been well established that the gut helps to manufacture serotonin and poor gut health can affect mental state.

Many women experience anxiety and irritability with estrogen dominance. Women are prone to anxiety, insomnia, post partem depression with low progesterone.

Men experience depression, anxiety, insomnia, low libido, and more with low testosterone levels. Anxiety and insomnia can also occur with low progesterone which men also make in small amounts.

A host of micronutrient deficiencies can affect mood. For instance, low glycine and omega-3 fatty acids can contribute to anxiety and insomnia.

It is very well established that hypothyroidism can lead to depression and anxiety, as well as decreased resistance to stress.

Our Approach to Mental Health

We do not approach mental health the same way as the traditional medical model. We also do not start with reducing or changing medications. We still recommend seeing your psychiatrist if the relationship has already been established.

First, we assess the patient and identify their top problem areas and formulate a plan on what testing to perform.

Many times, we find that working on multiple small problem areas, the body begins to come back into balance and the mental health complaints begin to improve. This is a much more holistic approach than a medication intervention.

We are happy to answer any questions you may have and offer 15-minute consults to see if we may be a good fit for your needs.

Urinary Neurotransmitter Testing

Neurotransmitter testing is a specialized diagnostic method that analyzes urine samples to assess the levels of neurotransmitters, the chemical messengers in the brain. This advanced testing provides a comprehensive view of an individual’s neurotransmitter status, offering valuable information for understanding and addressing various mental health concerns.

Identifying Neurotransmitter Imbalances:

Neurotransmitters, such as serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, play crucial roles in mood regulation, cognition, and overall mental health. Neurotransmitter testing allows for the identification of imbalances in these neurotransmitters, offering insights into potential mental health conditions.

Uncovering Underlying Causes of Mental Health Issues:

Neurotransmitter imbalances are often associated with conditions like depression, anxiety, and mood disorders. Neurotransmitter testing helps uncover underlying causes, providing healthcare professionals with valuable information for a targeted and individualized approach to treatment.

Urinary neurotransmitter testing is a non-invasive tool used to assess levels of key neurotransmitters, such as serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, GABA, and glutamate, which play a crucial role in mental health. This testing method offers several potential clinical benefits:

  1. Personalized Treatment Plans – Helps guide targeted interventions by identifying neurotransmitter imbalances linked to conditions like anxiety, depression, ADHD, and insomnia.
  2. Non-Invasive and Convenient – Provides an easy-to-collect alternative to cerebrospinal fluid or blood testing.
  3. Tracking Treatment Response – Assists in monitoring the effectiveness of medications, supplements, and lifestyle changes over time.
  4. Identification of Dysregulation Patterns – Helps detect abnormalities in neurotransmitter metabolism that may contribute to mood disorders and cognitive dysfunction.
  5. Complementary to Other Diagnostic Tools – Can be used alongside clinical assessments and other lab tests to provide a more comprehensive view of mental health status.

While urinary neurotransmitter testing can offer valuable insights, its clinical utility remains debated due to variability in excretion rates and the body's complex neurotransmitter regulation. It is best used as part of a broader functional medicine approach rather than a standalone diagnostic tool.
